Marvel Reveals Evil Captain America’s Plans For a ‘Secret Empire’

In the ’70s, Steve Rogers was so demoralized by the revelation of the Secret Empire’s true leader that he briefly abandoned the identity of Captain America. Four decades later, that plot is coming full circle as Captain America stands at the heart of Marvel’s newest Secret Empire.

Marvel has formally announced its next major crossover event: Secret Empire, a nine-issue miniseries by writer Nick Spencer, artist Steve McNiven, and other contributing artists. Last year, Spencer’s ongoing Captain America comics revealed that Steve Rogers had been retroactively changed into a Hydra sleeper agent. While most of the Marvel Universe is unaware of Rogers’ transformation, he’s been gathering his forces and preparing to seize control of the world…and he might just pull it off!

“Our heroes will be tested both physically and morally against one of the most trusted heroes of all time and that’s the aspect of this story our characters face and what forces them to come together,” explained Marvel Executive Editor, Tom Brevoort. Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso added that “Secret Empire is the rallying cry for all the heroes — Avengers, Guardians, Defenders, X-Men, Spider-Man, Deadpool – to put aside their differences and unify in the defense of the Marvel Universe.”

In addition to the nine-issue miniseries, there will be a Secret Empire # 0 in April that will serve as a prologue to this event. And while Captain America may be the villain of this story, we wouldn’t be shocked at all if he is restored to his heroic self by the end of the series. That’s just how these things go in comics.
