Canadian Screen Awards Celebrate Film, TV And Digital Media

The Canadian Screen Awards (CSA) were handed out this past weekend, with big winners like CBC and Bell Media coming out on top.

CBC and its production partners took home 49 awards, more than any other broadcaster, during The Academy of Canadian Film & Television’s Canadian Screen Award week, which spanned four award galas honouring excellence in scripted, unscripted, documentary, news, sports and digital programming. CBC received 40 awards at galas held earlier in the week and nine awards during the broadcast gala. CBC projects that were honoured include CBC Sports, Firsthand – Guantanamo’s Child: Omar Khadr, Kim’s Convenience, Murdoch Mysteries, Schitt’s Creek and The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration.

“These awards are a testament to the quality of CBC’s distinctly Canadian content, which informs and entertains while reflecting our country’s rich diversity of voices and experiences,” said Heather Conway, Executive Vice-President, English Services at CBC, in a media release. “As Canada’s public broadcaster, we are proud to be at the very heart of this nation’s cultural ecosystem, nurturing and investing in Canadian creators and artists. Congratulations to all nominees and winners. CBC celebrates your passion, dedication and commitment to telling Canadian stories.”

Meanwhile, Bell Media and its partners were recognized with 35 television wins, including Best Dramatic Series (Orphan Black), Best Comedy (Letterkenny), Best Dramatic Actress (Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black), and Best Dramatic Actor (Adrian Holmes, 19-2).

Bell Media-supported film projects won 18 awards, including Best Motion Picture (It’s Only the End of the World), Best Direction (It’s Only the End of the World/Xavier Dolan), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (The Other Half/Tatiana Maslany), and Best Original Screenplay (Weirdos/Daniel MacIvor).

“We are constantly inspired by the many brilliant minds working tirelessly to create phenomenal homegrown series and films in Canada,” said Randy Lennox, President at Bell Media, in a different press release. “We are humbled by the industry-leading content that Bell Media’s partners and team members have produced this year, representing a diversity of programming from news, sports, scripted, factual, reality, lifestyle, and music.”

The televised portion of the Canadian Screen Awards was hosted by funnyman Howie Mandel.
