Pro gamer Corentin “Vitality Rocky” Chevrey has bagged a whopping $160,000 (£123,000) prize after winning the FIFA 17 Ultimate Team Championship, after coming out on top against the Englishman Shaun “Shellzz” Springette by way of a thrilling last-minute goal from a controversial free kick.
The cross console tournament saw players from across the globe travelling to Berlin to prove themselves as the best Ultimate Team player, with over six million players having competed for spots in the Ultimate Team Championship since last fall for a collective prize pool of $400,000 (£307,500). Organised by EA, the tournament saw players on both the PS4 and Xbox One duke it out, with the finals seeing the company unlock every Ultimate Team player so that they could be utilised by the event’s competitors.
Vitality Rocky and Shellz bested all comers to go one-on-one in the grand final, with the pair playing two matches on each of their favoured consoles. Vitality Rocky won the first match on the PS4, his away console, though Shellz managed to scrape back the deficit in their Xbox One rematch. At 3-2 down, the aggregate of 4-4 would have ensured that Shellz would have been the victor, with him having scored more goals on his away console. However, in the 89th minute a dubious free kick decision was called, giving Vitality Rocky the late opportunity to score an equaliser and go home the champion.

After initially fumbling the free kick, a defensive error saw Shellz losing the ball just outside the box, with Vitality Rocky managing to gain control of possession as a result and bury the ball in the back of the net in extra time. Shellz didn’t have the time to mount a comeback, with Vitality Rocky lifting the trophy and taking home the top prize.

However, despite finishing in second place Shellz’s journey isn’t over just yet, as the final eight have each earned themselves a spot in the FIFA Interactive World Cup, an annual tournament set to take place in London. The prize fund for this year’s event will be even larger at $200,000 (£153,000), while the champion will also get the opportunity to rub shoulders with a variety of football stars and icons at The Best FIFA Football Awards, also held by EA.
