Never Mind: Amy Pascal Says ‘Venom’ Isn’t Part of the MCU After All

The producer of Spider-Man: Homecoming has some explaining to do.

Amy Pascal – who worked closely with Marvel Studios to reboot the superhero and introduce him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – said on video last week that Sony’s upcoming spin-offs – Venom and Silver & Black – were an “adjunct” to the MCU. Let’s refresh your memories with the quote…

“Those movies will all take place in the world that we’re now creating for Peter Parker,” Amy Pascal told FilmStarts. “They’ll be adjuncts to it, they may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world and they will be connected to each other as well.”

The internet went aflutter with the news that Venom and Silver & Black would have direct connections to the MCU, and understandably so, since that seems to be what the producer told the press. But now Amy Pascal is walking back that statement along with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. They explained the actual connection between the franchises to Erik Childress from Fandango.

It’s hard not to look at Pascal’s original statement and interpret that there was a miscommunication behind the scenes, one that had to be speedily amended off-camera. But for all we know it’s just an awkward miscommunication which, given the subject matter, quickly took on a life of its own.

Either way, it’s over now. Venom, Silver Sable and Black Cat won’t be visiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. At least we have Spider-Man: Homecoming to keep us company.
