Besides being truly a genius musician, Kanye West is also a walking, talking meme gold mine, and his biggest, brightest moment in that sense was the famed Kanye Taylor incident from 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Yes, eight years have passed since the moment Kanye birthed this meme that won’t quit, and it’s still highly relevant.
For all of you that don’t remember this tasty Kanye Taylor Swift moment, well… Kanye was being a big douche, unnecessary too, so that might not seem like a huge surprise, but back when he was a beloved figure, an idolized musician before all else, it was a truly big shock. It’s the definitive moment when he turned from a good guy into a villain, like Smeagol turns to Gollum’s thinking at the end of Two Towers.
Original Kanye Taylor Moment
So Taylor was accepting her award for the Best Female Video, for the song You Belong With Me, when Kanye went up the stage unannounced and took the microphone from the young singer who was 20 at the time. Kanye proceeded to say the immortalized words “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!”. Ending his mini-rant with a gif-gold shrug. To which the little girl was left stunned. And as sources from behind the scenes state, she continued to cry throughout the night. Tragedy.
Of course, Kanye was referring to Beyoncé’s Single Ladies, and just to be clear – neither of the videos was all that great. Swift’s was a moody teenage drama seen a million times, Beyoncé’s was three chicks dancing. Kanye’s haircut on that night demanded more creativity.
The fallout was great with Kanye getting flak from various celebrities, the current president, and a former one also. Kanye apologized to the girl on the spot and after on his blog, but then deleted the apology which is somehow the most Kanye thing that Kanye West did.
But that wasn’t the end for Kanye West and Taylor Swift. Fast forward a couple of years later and they’re beefing again, only this time Swift isn’t a scared little girl.
Kanye Taylor Continued Feud
Before the 2016 Grammy’s Kanye released a track named Famous in which he mentions Taylor Swift in a not so flattering manner.
For all my Southside niggas that know me best
I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex
Why? I made that bitch famous (Goddamn)
I made that bitch famous
What actually surfaced was the video of Kanye West and Taylor Swift speaking on the phone about the first two bars, with Swift approving them, but the second two lines went unmentioned and irritated the pop singer so much that she addressed them at the Grammys.
The phone call video doesn’t make either of them look that great as Swift accepts the two questionable lines as a praise and a nice thing to say, while Kanye still overshadows her by being a huge hypocrite. Here’s the partial transcript from the video.
Taylor Swift: “I’m like this close to overexposure.”
Kanye West: “Oh, well this I think this a really cool thing to have.”
Taylor Swift: “I know, I mean it’s like a compliment, kind of.”
Kanye West: “All I give a f–k about is you as a person and as a friend, I want things that make you feel good. ”
Taylor Swift: “That’s sweet.”
Even if you despise the whole celebrity-seduced culture you can’t deny that the whole Kanye Taylor situation is hilarious. Just another way Kanye keeps entertaining us.
