There aren’t many filmmakers who have had the same artistic and cultural impact as Steven Spielberg. The director of Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan has enjoyed nearly unparalleled success in the entertainment industry, winning awards, changing lives, and permanently altering the way movies are made and released.
It was only a matter of time before the life and career of Steven Spielberg would become the subject of a high-profile documentary, and HBO apparently decided that the time is nigh. Spielberg is heading to the cable network on October 7, 2017, and will also be made available on their various streaming platforms, like HBO GO and HBO NOW (via Coming Soon).
Spielberg comes courtesy of director and producer Susan Lacy, who has won 14 Emmy Awards for her work on American Masters, in episodes that explored the life and career of artists like Lillian Gish, Judy Garland and Alfred Hitchcock. She has completed over 80 interviews while producing Spielberg, a film that will feature conversations with Steven Spielberg’s family, friends, and co-workers, as well as behind-the-scenes footage from his classic films.

Interview subjects for Spielberg include J.J. Abrams, Christian Bale, Drew Barrymore, Cate Blanchett, Francis Ford Coppola, Daniel Craig, Daniel Day-Lewis, Brian de Palma, Laura Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Richard Dreyfuss, Ralph Fiennes, Harrison Ford, David Geffen, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Holly Hunter, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Ben Kingsley, Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas, Liam Neeson, Martin Scorsese, Oprah Winfrey and Robert Zemeckis, to name a few. It’s an impressive list of names, and only serves to highlight the enormous reach that Spielberg has had over the course of his long and storied career.
Don’t let this exhaustive career retrospective fool you. Steven Spielberg is 70 years old and still as productive as ever. His next feature film, the historical drama The Papers, is due in theaters on December 22, 2017, and his ambitious science-fiction adventure thriller Ready Player One, based on the bestselling novel by Ernest Cline, arrives in theaters just a few months later, on March 30, 2018.
