A recent press demo of Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus features a darkly humorous exchange between two Nazi soldiers, with players noting that it closely — and almost certainly intentionally — mirrors real-world discussions surrounding the alt-right.
The exchange sees one Nazi bemoaning how their detractors “promote violence” towards the fascists “just because we hold a different point of view.” After stating that “acts of violence are never okay,” the Nazi soldier then goes on to enthusiastically discuss his participation in an upcoming assignment alongside his “death squad,” exhibiting a complete lack of self-awareness.

The exchange is similar to the discussion surrounding the video of alt-right leader Richard Spencer being punched, with the white supremacist’s supporters criticizing those who supported the individual who attacked him. Despite Spencer having previously made headlines for holding a conference in which he spouted his ethno-nationalist views to a room filled with supporters holding up the Nazi salute, many defended him after the video was posted online, suggesting that the attack was a violent overreaction.

As a result, Spencer’s detractors began to sarcastically use the sentence “so much for the tolerant left” in response to those defending alt-right supporters and other white supremacists. According to Know Your Meme, the quote is “used by leftist Twitter to mock conservatives who sincerely use the phrase to describe examples of when they feel the left is intolerant of their beliefs.”
The full Wolfenstein 2 exchange can be viewed below:
“I have no sympathy for terrorists. How can they promote violence towards us, just because we hold a different point of view?”
“They are violent creatures, Karl.”
“I think they were born without a moral compass. We are humans too, aren’t we? Violence only begets violence.”
“You’re right Karl. Acts of violence are never okay. Never.”
“What kind of society would this be if I were to kill anyone who does not subscribe to my viewpoint?”
“A war zone Karl. It would be a war zone.”
“Makes me sick. By the way, did you apply for the New Orleans assignment?”
“I did! Are you going?”
“Damn straight!”
“Maybe we’ll be in the same death squad?”
“I hope so! We work well together, don’t you think?”
“I do!”
And here’s video footage of the scene, captured by Polygon’s Nick Robinson:
