Last week, Ted Cruz made headlines after liking a porn video on Twitter. Since then, the “actress” in said post Cory Chase went on to make the news herself after stating in interviews that she was not a fan of Cruz, and that he should have paid for the video. But at the same time, the video in question became “the fastest porn video to reach one million views,” according to Vice President of Pornhub Corey Price.
If you’ll recall, another recent example of a pornographic film hitting the spotlight in recent memory involved a woman, two men and a salad. We don’t need to go into the details here, but it went on to become a widely shared meme due in large part to people tweeting about it.
So I guess you could say that x-rated posts on Twitter actually help the porn industry. Those individuals in the thick of it wouldn’t disagree with you, either, and have chosen to not only be much obliged, but use the social media juggernaut to their advantage.
Daron Press, president of adult cam show company Camsoda, told the Huffington Post that “Twitter loves porn,” and porn loves Twitter because it “puts the power in performers’ hands.” And since free porn on the internet and social media has been responsible for a huge decline in DVD sales for many years, why not take advantage when it throws you a bone (pun not intentional, but still funny).
Furthermore, even major adult film stars have come around to Twitter as a marketing tool for their brand. Cam girls like former Teen Mom Farrah Abraham and Tanya Tate tend to be paid better when they possess massive social followings. Tate was even quoted as saying “I use all facets of social media, including Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, but Twitter is the only one that allows hardcore pics, GIFs and trailers.” Such exposure even lead her to attracting audiences in other countries she may have otherwise not been exposed to (again, unintentional pun): “It’s allowed me to build a following in countries that don’t allow their citizens to access regular porn sites. You won’t believe how many fans I have in India and Saudi Arabia.”
Unless Twitter stops allowing adult content to be posted on their clients’ accounts in the near future, it appears their relationship to the porn industry shall remain a “friends with benefits”-type situation.
