With the film already breaking pre-sales records before its April 27th release date, Avengers: Infinity War is poised to make some serious bank. But tell that to director James Cameron — a guy who’s no stranger to cleaning up at the box office despite a recent Marvel flick taking his precious Titanic down a peg — and you might be shocked to hear his stance on the matter. Well, maybe not shocked considering that aside we just mentioned, but it still sounds like shots fired to us.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote his documentary series AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction, Cameron had this to say when it comes to the recent (10 years running now) string of massively popular Marvel superhero films:

I’m hoping we’re going to start getting Avenger fatigue. Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, Come on, guys, there are other stories to tell besides, you know, hypogonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process.”

If superheroes were actually real instead of pampered Hollywood actors, they might actually take offense to that “hypogonadal males” crack. Also, it seems someone is forgetting the whole side plot of Avengers: Age of Ultron involving Hawkeye’s secret family nestled away in the middle of nowhere. Actually, we’re pretty sure even the Marvel films since then did, too.

Since the comment seemed to be made in jest and wasn’t to be taken as seriously as, say, Steven Spielberg saying Netflix movies aren’t real movies, perhaps it’s best that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took it in stride in his interview with Vulture:

Uh, he loves the movies! That’s awesome! Wow, James Cameron loves our movies! That’s exciting!

What now, Spielburger? Netflix Wants To Buy Movie Theaters

Apparently, Cameron is still pretty gung-ho about his Avatar sequels, as revealed in the same EW interview. In fact, he’s likening them to the freaking Godfather movies. Maybe that’s because there was a 16 year gap between Parts II and III, and that’s about how long we’ll have to wait for the Na’vi to return.

So what say you, loyal reader? Is it time superhero movies packed it in, or is there room for two multi-billion dollar franchises at the cineplex?
