Sometimes a great album is more nostalgic than any movie, like a soundtrack to your own life story. For us, one of those albums is Incubus’ Make Yourself. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, we recently revisited the Calabasas, California band’s breakout album from 1999.

Incubus’ second proper studio album came at the end of the ’90s but it still holds up against the decades’ peak records with chart-topping singles “Pardon Me,” “Stellar,” and “Drive.” Up until that point, the band had toured with the likes of 311 and Korn, but magic happened when Nirvana/REM producer, Scott Litt, shepherded the recording sessions.
Make Yourself earned this slow-burned band some hard-won recognition in mainstream culture, despite its reluctance to pander to any ear. It also allowed Brandon Boyd and the boys to kickstart a multi-million dollar nonprofit to highlight environmental and oceanic awareness.
