There’s a meteor headed toward planet Earth, poised to cause humanity’s imminent demise. What do you do? Call a sex hotline, of course. Or at least, that’s what you do if you’re a character in Netflix’s Don’t Look Up.
The apocalyptic drama, which features a cast of heavyweights including Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, and Ariana Grande, is a thinly-veiled metaphor for the climate crisis. Basically, a planet-obliterating comet is hurtling toward Earth and scientists must convince the world’s population that it’s real.
In one scene, Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) plugs a phone number for tech company BASH in an ad. He says people can call it for “peace of mind.”
“Right now, millions of you are having these same doubts and questions about the approaching comet,” he says. “That is why BASH cellular, in conjunction with the United States government, is creating a new hotline, free of charge, to answer all of your questions.”
“And who knows?” he continues. “Maybe, just maybe, one of our scientists can be that friend we all need to lean on during uncertain times.”
Well, if you dial that number, you won’t reach a scientist…but you might reach a sex worker willing to pretend she’s a scientist. That’s because some curious viewers discovered that the number belongs to a sex hotline.
“Welcome to America’s hottest hotline. Guys, hot ladies are waiting to talk to you. Press 1 now,” the number allegedly stated. “Ladies, to talk to interesting and exciting guys, press 2 to connect free now.”
Whether or not director Adam McKay chose that number intentionally or accidentally is unknown.
What we do know is that if the end of the world is coming, there’s no better way to go out than with a bang…
