You’ve heard of a grand slam, but have you heard of a Hamm Slamm? Yeah, we know it sounds like some kind of sub sandwich promotion, but it’s now a term in the baseball lexicon thanks to Mad Men star Jon Hamm.
The actor coined the term while playing a field reporter at the MLB All-Star Game at the Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles. He was asking some of the pro baseball players about their favorite terms for home runs (“bomb” and “nuke” were a couple of the choice ones) when he came up with his own: the “Hamm Slamm.”
“We’ve learned that there’s a lot of names for a home run, but they’re all awesome,” Hamm said in his reporting piece before the game. “We also learned that there’s a lot of major league baseball players that would do anything to get their hands on a bedazzled canned ham.”
“A bedazzled cam ham? Where did that come from?” you’re wondering.
Well, Hamm had a blinged-out necklace with the newly minted baseball slang on it made. Hence the bedazzled canned ham. And if you think no dude would be caught dead wearing it, think again.
Travis d’Arnaud of the Atlanta Braves posed for a picture wearing it, and Mets player Pete Alonso also got ahold of it – and promptly broke it.
Ah, well. One thing’s for sure: Jon Hamm sure is a good sport. As for the Hamm Slamm? We think it’s a marketing fail. Back to the drawing board, Draper.
