It’s hard to believe that the career of Steve Martin could be coming to a close, but a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter suggests just that. The 77-year-old comedian, actor, author, artist, and, yes, banjo player has hinted that his current project, the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, could be his last in Hollywood.
It’s a humbling realization for someone who has racked up 60 years in show business and nary an enemy made. Even if you weren’t born in the ‘80s and early ‘90s when Martin became a household name with hit movies like The Jerk, Roxanne, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, L.A. Story, Parenthood, and the Father of the Bride franchise, you’ve surely caught up on his filmography by now.
If not, and you’re a true crime or comedy (or Selena Gomez) fan, you likely tuned in to Only Murders in the Building and quickly became hooked as the show is the streamer’s most-watched original comedy. (Though we have to say, we find the Emmy-nominated series underwhelming.)
But it sounds like after the series ends (it’s already been renewed for Season 3), Martin might be hanging up his hat.
“When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it.”
That said, he isn’t entirely going away. His 12th book, Number One Is Walking: My Life in the Movies and Other Diversions, is forthcoming, as is an Apple TV+ documentary about his life and work.
As for the banjo? It remains to be seen if Martin will continue to perform with his band Steep Canyon Rangers.
Happy Birthday, Steve Martin.

We sure hope we get to enjoy more of the many talents of Steve Martin with whatever years he has left, no matter what form they take.
