The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) once ruled that peanut butter is a liquid but debate around the subject has persisted since online. The ruling restricts passengers from carrying more than 3.4oz of liquids in their carry-on luggage on flights and the agency recently reiterated its previous verdict on the nutty spread, sparking a new wave of discussion.
On August 24, the TSA posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Peanut Butter is a liquid. We said what we said.” Other users on the social media platform reacted to the statement with some humorous quips, but the TSA has made sure to make its stance on the issue clear.
TSA enforces strict limits on peanut butter in carry-on
A while back, the TSA enforced strict limits on passengers carrying peanut butter in their flight carry-on luggage. In March 2023, a user on X (formerly Twitter) recounted his encounter with the administration at an airport. The individual, Patrick Neve, wrote that he “tried to take peanut butter through airport security” when TSA told him, “Sorry, no liquids, gels, or aerosols.” Confused, Neve claimed he said, “I want you to tell me which of those things you think peanut butter is.”
Responding to Neve’s post, TSA made a statement on its official Instagram account. The post read, “Peanut Butter…a liquid has no definite shape and takes a shape dictated by its container.” The caption further stated, “You may not be nuts about it, but TSA considers your PB a liquid. In carry-on, it needs to be 3.4oz or less. Make sure all your travel-sized liquids fit in one quart-sized bag. #PeanutButter.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the TSA also stated, “Peanut Butter is a liquid. We said what we said.” Following this, users quipped about the TSA declaration. Some asked them to demonstrate by “drinking a bottle” of PB, while others expressed their concern and confusion, further criticizing the agency’s limitations on passengers.
