Vice President Kamala Harris recently sat down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss the issues in the country that matter most to working families. During the virtual campaign event from Michigan, the Democratic presidential candidate also shared her stance regarding gun control. Amid her 2024 presidential run, Kamla Harris’ gun statement was quick to catch the internet’s attention.
Kamala Harris jokes during gun control discussion with Oprah Winfrey
On Thursday, Kamala Harris joined Oprah Winfrey for the “Unite for America” rally. During the online event, the Vice President talked to several people about the contemporary issues affecting working families. One of the exchanges was regarding gun violence in the country.
During the discussion, Winfrey shared she was surprised to learn during last week’s presidential debate that the Vice President owns a gun. Kamala Harris admitted, “I’m a gun owner… If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot.” The Vice President continued, “Sorry, probably should not have said that. My staff will deal with that later.”
The exchange came after a video from recent school shootings was shown. Winfrey said, “We live in a country where 383,000 children have been exposed to gun violence.” She added, “It’s a number until it’s your child.” Following that, a 15-year-old opened up about the incident when she was shot twice by a fellow student. After the family shared their horrifying experience, they urged the people in power to bring a “change.” When Winfrey questioned what “change” they wanted to see, the teen’s father replied, “Common sense.” He explained, “I think the first step would just be metal detectors in schools.”
Harris agreed with the teen’s father’s statement of applying “common sense.” The Vice President said, “I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence, some people have been pushing a really false choice.” She continued, “To suggest you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away.” The VP further stated she is in “favor” of the Second Amendment. “I’m in favor of assault weapons bans, universal background checks, red flag laws,” she noted, “These are just common sense.”
