During the interview, Elton John shared news about losing eyesight in his right eye due to an infection that has caused him to go partially blind. The subject came up after Robin Roberts questioned him about the new album he had talked about. John replied, “It’s been a while since I’ve done anything” before telling Roberts about his eyesight. He further revealed that got the infection during his visit to the south of France in July.

The singer announced that it has been four months since he hasn’t been able to see. He then noted that his left eye is also not the “greatest” so that doesn’t help with his eyesight. John then discussed how there is still “hope and encouragement” that his eye condition might improve over time, further highlighting that he felt “kind of stuck at the moment.” Later, the 77-year-old mentioned that while going to the studio and recording for the new album remains an option, he is unsure as he can’t see the lyrics.

Despite the challenges, Elton John explained that he is “taking an initiative” to remedy his eye condition, calling the situation “unfortunate.” He continued how the eyesight problem “floored” him, admitting, “I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.” Nonetheless, John exhibited a positive attitude, calling himself the “luckiest man in the world” and taking pride in his upcoming documentary, his sons, and his attitude toward himself.

“Elton John: Never Too Late” hit theaters in the U.K. and the U.S. for a limited run and will premiere on Disney+ on December 13.
