What the hell are the MP3 Music Awards? If you’re asking yourself that question, welcome to the club. The annual awards ceremony was established in 2007 to celebrate and award the most popular artists and bands as well as the best mp3 players and mp3 retailers. Because, y’know, there’s not nearly enough industry self-congratulating going on.
The 2011 winners were announced on Saturday, Dec. 10 after public vote using MMA’s Judging Jukebox Player. Kanye West was given the nod for Hip-Hop/R&B/Rap with his “All Of The Lights” collaboration with Rihanna and Kid Cudi. Dionne Bromfield, known for being the goddaughter of Amy Winehouse, for won Best Teen act (and we’re absolutely sure she won only on those merits – right?), The Saturdays for the Indie/Rock/Pop prize (because at least seven people know they exist), and Adele for the Radio/Charts/Download for “Someone Like You.” Because it’s Adele, damnit, and when we’re giving the industry one more reason to celebrate itself, this husky chanteuse is mandated at least one win per event. Fine print, people. Read the fine print.
MMA claim to act as a “major industry catalyst, creating the conditions to inspire diverse artists / bands and audiences whilst shaping memorable and unforgettable experiences.” Meanwhile, anyone who’s paid half a minute’s attention to any of these third-tier awards shows in their lifetimes will readily tell you that absolutely none of that is true. But hey, new awards show!
