Xbox 360 Leads U.S. Console Market for 31 Months Straight

The recent news that the PlayStation 3 overtook the Xbox 360 worldwide overshadowed an amazing feat by Microsoft. Its console has been dominating in the United States.

One of several details highlighted by July 2013’s NPD is that the Xbox 360 has continued to hold the top spot for consoles. July marked the 31st month in a row that the Xbox 360 has been the best-selling console in the U.S. The result was a net revenue of $178 million on Xbox 360 hardware and software, a truly staggering number for a console approaching its eighth birthday.

Microsoft has also brought to attention that its software attachment rate is extremely high with “eight of the top 10 console games” being from the Xbox 360 platform. Older games such as Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto IV somehow managed to make the list.

Microsoft released a new SKU for the Xbox 360 shortly after E3 in June. A price drop wasn’t part of the picture, but it looks a lot better. Or so Microsoft says, anyway.

Even though Xbox has been in the industry since 2001 it’s still the new guy since Sony and especially Nintendo have a lot more heritage. For Microsoft to dominate a region like it has in the U.S. on its second console is quite a feat.
