Just a few days after a perplexingly bizarre album promo video, MGMT is streaming its self-titled third album a week ahead of its release (September 17th via Columbia Records). Take a listen below via Rdio.
There’s a rather sizeable possibility that this release marks the last full-media spectacle we see from the band, as the album’s far-left-field sounds and relative abandonment of danceability makes it a tough digestion for Hipster Nation.
The predicament is certainly not helped by singer Andrew VanWyngarden, who said, “I don’t even know if it’s music we would want to listen to. It’s just what’s coming out of us. We didn’t make a single compromise.”
The album will be also accompanied by The Optimizer, “unique visual elements to accompany and illustrate the new music,” which hooks up listeners “with a simultaneous aural and optical listening experience featuring video and CGI work.”
