Update: As it turns out, the people who bid the price up weren’t actually interested in the item. That would explain why the item which is valued around $3,000 to $5,000 in the current market went for way more than that.
Since the item was sold on eBay, the buyer will not be held accountable. The seller will have to relist the item or find another means of selling it.
Original Story: There rare, and then theres RARE. The NES’ Nintendo World Championship game is considered one of the most sought after possessions of a video game collector. So how much does one of the rarest video games ever go for? You’d be surprised.
An auction has just ended for an NES cart of Nintendo World Championship, and it sold for a mind-blowing $99,902. The auction began at $4,999 and quickly accelerated toward the six-figure mark during the final two hours of auction.
What’s more impressive is that it has a completely shredded label. You can’t even see the name of the game on the front of the cart. To make up for that very clear fault, the seller says that the game plays to this day despite being used for gaming competitions a full 24 year ago.
Nintendo World Championship was used by Nintendo as a promotional tool during 1990. Only 116 are said to have ever been printed each with the purpose of being played in nationwide city championships for money. There was never a consumer version of the game.
Out of the 116 made 90 of them were the gray version as seen in the recent auction. The other 26 were gold colored, given to winners of a contest provided by Nintendo Power magazine.
Previously, cartridges usually in much better shape have sold for between $11,000 and $31,000. It is unclear why the latest auction has gone for more than three times any previous sale. Whatever the case, the $99,902 sale is now considered one of the most expensive video-game related auctions in history.
