Excitement has bloomed since Sony’s announced its virtual reality headset for the PS4: Project Morpheus. As exciting as it has been, good hardware isn’t much good without software. Thankfully, it is already building a quality list of supporting games, one of which is arguably the most hyped upcoming racer on the market.
Slightly Mad Studios has pledged support for Project Morpheus in its upcoming Project Cars racing game. They described what the experience will bring to the experience with the following:
Virtual reality is a perfect fit for racing games since the game world literally comes rushing towards you from the distance and the increased sense of depth and speed that stereoscopic vision affords you makes this incredibly real and tangible. So when you’re racing you get a much better perception of distances and position and you feel far more enveloped by that world rather than just looking through a window at it.
Being transported into the cockpit of one of the world’s most powerful racing machines not only means you get to feel the thrill of racing down a straight at over 200 miles per hour, but you get to look around and see the other cars around you without anything more than moving your head. Other games have tried to produce a similar feature with head tracking, but display(s) remaining stationary has remained a limitation… until now.
The visuals in Project Cars are intense, too. If the PS4 cn handle running it at a high resolution without sacrificing smooth framerate, it will be a good demonstration for other develops who might feel they have to make major sacrifices if they support the device.
Project Cars has shown a lot of promise since it debuted on crowd funding over a year ago. It’s targeted at fans of Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport, which is a perfect fit for virtual reality. It will also support Oculus Rift on PC at launch.
