Tuesday saw Australian punk trio Dune Rats drop a new single plus details of a debut album and world tour.
‘Funny Guy’ is the name of the new Dune Rats track and the band’s laid back approach saw the boys take a simple approach to constructing the single and upcoming full-length album.
The Brisbane stoner punk trio took heed of advice given to Nirvana from producer Steve Albini ahead of In Utero, “If a record takes more than a week to make, somebody’s fucking up.”
Dune Rats camped out in a tiny beach shed at bassist Brett Jansh’s mum’s place before recording in Melbourne.
“(The new single is) called ‘Funny Guy’,” drummer BC Michaels told Triple J in a hilarious interview. “And it’s pretty sick. I swear, man. We recorded [the whole album] over a week in the studios in Melbourne. And then it was mixed in four days. It’s self-titled and that’s all I know about it.
“We did it in December because we were there on my birthday. And I remember my birthday. That’s good. We recorded it with our pal … what do you call him? … um … Uncle Woody Annison. Yeah. We did it in his studios Red Door Studios. Red Door Sounds? Red Door Studios.”
Dune Rats are heading off on a world tour in support of the new self-titled album, due June 1, and will visit South Africa, the UK, Europe and Asia for 18 international dates before performing 10 Aussie gigs in June.
