Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner is confused by the decision to have Metallica headline Glastonbury 2014, the frontman has revealed.
Speaking to Time Out London, Turner said that he is unsure whether Metallica are the right band to perform a Pyramid Stage headline slot, saying: “I’m not sure it adds up.”
Turner admitted he was a fan of the metal band, but didn’t believe that Glastonbury was the right festival for them to perform at. He continued: “I know we’d buzz off it, but fundamentally could you have Metallica in the hippy nucleus?”
Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis’ selection of headline acts has drawn criticism in the past, with Jay-Z’s 2008 set in particular raising eyebrows before the rapper had even taken to the stage. While we now know that Jay-Z knocked it out of the park, prior to his performance Noel Gallagher said that hip-hop was “wrong” for the festival, saying: “Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go ‘Kylie Minogue?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.”
Jay-z responded to the criticism by performing a cover of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ during his set at the festival. Whether or not Metallica gives us a rendition of ‘A Certain Romance’ remains to be seen.
