It’s no secret that Destiny is one of, if not the biggest game of 2014. It’s been talked about for years, marketed to perfection, and as a result had record-breaking success in its first day on the market.
Destiny has sold $500 million worth of units, becoming the best-selling new IP in gaming history. Activision has gone on record to say that it’ll be its next “billion dollar franchise”. In other words, you’re going to be seeing the Destiny name a lot heading into the future.
Following the announcement of Destiny‘s sales figures, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick shared:
This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.
Destiny has a $500 million budget to be invested over the next 10 years for post-release content and marketing. So, it’s reasonable to say that it’ll be profitable within the first week.

Although it has been commercially successful, many gamers have already found reason to be disappointed with the game. Destiny’s Amazon page has a handful of low scores, and the same can be said on Metacritic where its user rating currently stands at 6.0/10.
