Rise Against brought roughly ten thousand people out to play for their mid-afternoon set at the sold-out 2014 Monster Energy Aftershock Festival on Sunday, and despite the triple-digit temps and clouds of dust choking out attendees, a riotous party was had.
From blistering opener “Ready to Fall,” through the bouncing relentlessness of “Behind Closed Doors” and closers “Satellite” and “Savior,” the band was relentlessly energized – particularly frontman Tim McIlrath, who was grinning like a crazy man through half the set. It’s been argued that all their songs sound the same, but in live performance there’s a greater depth and charge to the music that lends the band a good deal more color than the tired radio jams we’re been beaten over the head by for the past few years.
