A jaw-dropping run of musicians paid tribute to the late George Harrison at a special tribute concert last night (September 28) in Los Angeles, including Brian Wilson, The Killers’ Brandon Flowers, Conan O’Brien, Weird Al Yankovic, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and many more. Hosted by Jameson, all proceeds from the gig went to Sweet Relief – a charity for musicians struggling financially due to illness or disability.
George Fest: A Night To Honor The Music of George Harrison took place at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre, and showcased a barrage of George-leaning Beatles hits and Harrison solo compositions. Spoon’s Britt Daniel and Alex Fischel teamed up with Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd for Let It Be’s “I Me Mine,” while Ben Harper took on “Give Me Love (Peace on Earth)” from Living in the Material World and Heart’s Ann Wilson enlisted Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum for the All Things Must Pass track “Beware of Darkness.”
Additionally, Brandon Flowers of The Killers rocked a buoyant “Got My Mind Set on You” from 1987’s Cloud Nine, while Weird Al Yankovic tackled “What Is Life” from 1970’s All Things Must Pass, and an all-star rendition of “My Sweet Lord” was led by The Beach Boys’ Al Jardine and Wilson. Harrison’s son, Dhani, also played at the event, and O’Brien also stopped by to perform The Beatles’ B-side “Old Brown Shoe,” written by Harrison.
