Guitarist extraordinaire Slash is gearing up for what will hopefully be one of the most memorable halftime NRL Grand Final performance in history. With the Rabbitohs V. Bulldogs showdown only days away, Slash admits that his introduction to Rugby League, in 2010, was an “intense” experience that might repeat itself this Sunday.
“It was fucking great. I’d never seen it up close and personal like that,” Slash told Fairfax about watching the Dragons beat the Roosters live four years ago. “I was just like: ‘fuck man, this is intense’.”
Slash will try to inject a similar intensity into this performance when he takes centre field at ANZ Stadium in front of more than 80,000 footy fans. Once Slash is done shredding, there will only be 40-minutes of game time left to decide the premiership. Though he’ll literally be the man in the middle, Slash isn’t ready to take sides.
“I have to be neutral,” Slash told News Limited’s Confidential, although the former Guns N’ Roses member did seem to have inclination towards South Sydney. “I can’t even figure out which name I like better because Rabbitohs is pretty cool. Bulldogs is very appropriate but Rabbitohs, there’s something to that, it’s like a gang.”
Slash is scheduled to perform Bent to Fly from his latest album, World on Fire. Though the storied axeman plays alongside Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators on the record, Slash will provide the half-time entertainment with nothing but a backing track, his trademark top hat, and trusty Gibson Les Paul.
No Guns N’ Roses tunes have been announced at this stage but no doubt those heading along to Soundwave 2015 will hear the classics when Slash and co. play as part of the heavy music festival.
South Sydney Rabbitohs will play the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the NRL Grand Final this Sunday, 5th October.
