Foo Fighters have been David Letterman’s house band all week for the Late Show With David Letterman, a residency yielding collaborations and cover songs including Joan Jett and Heart. The band’s third day in house hit a high note after the broadcast ended, however, when Letterman joined the band onstage for a web-exclusive story that tugged the heartstrings.

“Years and years and years ago when I became a father, I recognized I was older than most fathers, and so did my son. And so I said I have to find something I can do with my son and we can do it together,” Letterman said. He then shared a story of skiing with his son in Montana, with an accompanying ski instructor filming Letterman and his son during their bonding moments on the mountain.

When Letterman received a DVD of the experience in the mail shortly thereafter, he found that the acompanying music was Foo Fighters’ “Miracle.” “This is the second song of theirs that will always have great, great meaning for me for the rest of my life,” Letterman said as the band launched into a touching rendition of the In Your Honor track.
On the show, the Foos paired up with pioneering swamp rocker Tony Joe White for a take on his classic “Polk Salad Annie,” a track that was also famously covered by Elvis Presley.
Then it was time to embrace the cheese with a lo-fi lawyer commercial in which the band transformed into “Grohl, Hawkins, Mendel, Shiflett, Smear & Associates.” “We’ll fight Foo for you,” the band says, adding they have 25 years of experience.
