Awesome: Infographic Charts Vinyl Revival vs. Digital Domination

 

Due in no small part to Jack White’s relentless efforts, a major resurgence of vinyl has taken place in the past year. While the vinyl cult obsessions have always run deep, recently the hipsterfication of vinyl promotion (yes, they really sell records in Whole Foods) and a number of high profile vinyl releases have shown a marked uptick in popularity for that sacred black circle.

To break down the shift in popularity and contrast it with the digital market, the Superfi Blog has compiled the data into a fascinating infographic. In it, they question the popularity of digital mediums and what it all means for the music, in both the long and short term. For instance, while Record Store Day in 2012 saw a 27% rise in vinyl sales compared to the previous week, in 2013 that percentage rose to 59%. Still, that paled in comparison to 2014, in which vinyl sales rose 133% from the previous week.
