The New 52 is over. Welcome The New 49?
DC Comics has revealed that its 2011 reboot initiative, The New 52 will be coming to an end in June after the Convergence event. However, this is not another linewide reboot, as 25 of DC’s ongoing superhero series will continue with the same continuity as before.
Those books will be joined by 24 new titles that will “[herald] in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio. “Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics – there will be a book for you beginning in June.”
Even the returning titles will have a creative shakeup. Geoff Johns is staying on Justice League for The Darkseid Wars arc that will pit the forces of Apokolips against the Anti-Monitor. However, Johns will be leaving Superman after eight issues while Gene Luen Yang (Avatar: The Last Airbender) steps in as the new writer alongside series artist John Romita Jr.
14 of the new titles have been revealed at IGN and Comic Book Resources. Among the most notable new projects are a Batman Beyond ongoing series by writer Dan Jurgens & artist Bernard Chang, Starfire by the Harley Quinn writing team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner with artist Emanuela Lupacchino, We Are Robin by Lee Bermejo with artists Rob Haynes and Khary Randolph and Justice League of America with Bryan Hitch as the writer and artist.
