The major talking point emanating from Liverpool and Manchester United’s Premier League clash on Sunday (March 22nd) is undoubtedly the red card dished out to Steven Gerrard after the captain stamped his boots into the leg of Ander Herrera, in what was an uncharacteristically unprofessional move from the veteran that saw him dismissed after spending just 38 seconds on the pitch.
Following the match Gerrard accepted full responsibility for his actions, apologising to the fans and players alike. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said that the club will “move on” from the incident and praised Gerrard for his swift apology, though some Liverpool fans may not so readily accept it as his actions contributed to the club losing out on a crucial 3 points, with United defeating them 2-1.
A victory would have seen Liverpool climb ahead of their Manchester rivals to fourth place, but the loss means that they now sit outside of the top four and their chances of Champions League football are slipping out of their grasp. The fans providing commentary for Sky Sports’ FanZone were on hand to articulate the thoughts of both clubs’ supporters following the incident, with them having very different reactions to the sight of the captain seeing red. It is now likely that Gerrard will miss the next two Premier League games, along with the club’s FA Cup quarter-final with Blackburn.
Following his dismissal, Gerrard said: “I need to accept it; the [referee’s] decision was right. I’ve let down my team-mates and the fans.
“I take full responsibility. I don’t know what caused it. Probably just a reaction to the initial tackle.
“I shouldn’t say more about it really. I’ve just come out here to apologise to the dressing room and supporters.”
