Muse Set to Fly Drones Over Audience at Live Shows: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Muse are planning to fly drones above the heads of their live audience members when they embark upon their next tour.

Drones will be the title of the band’s upcoming seventh studio LP, and to hammer home its title they are planning to release an army of drones upon their fans, whilst presumably hoping that no one is mistakenly decapitated due to the high-speed propellers that carry the unmanned aerial vehicles in the air.

Speaking to LA’s Alt 98.7 station, the band’s Matt Bellamy and Dominic Howard explained their plans for their upcoming live tour, saying: “We always like to use the modern technology in our shows, the latest video screens or light shows, lasers, whatever is out there. Drones are obviously an interesting thing to try to bring into the live show so we’re going to try and do that. There’s going to be some difficulty with red tape of health and safety about flying things over, but the general thing idea is that as the tour starts that we’ll be using flying objects.”

At the risk of stating the obvious, the problem with drones is that there are multiple ways in which they could potentially harm those standing beneath them if they are not flown correctly, or if they come up against any outside interference – such as, say, a rowdy concert-goer throwing a pint glass at them – and having an army of them encircling a crowd of thousands will likely mean Muse will have to hire some pretty expensive lawyers prior to the tour dates.

Back in 2014, a restaurant in New York attempted to fly a singular drone above the heads of its patrons, only for it to inevitably cause a stir by crashing into a woman and cutting her face open. Maybe Muse’s plans will go off without a hitch, but it seems likely that someone with a bit of common sense will step in before this idea goes past its conceptual stages.

Drones is set to be released on June 8th, with Muse embarking upon their European tour on 29th May, starting in Munich and concluding with a performance in Rome.
