Gravel-throated legend Tom Waits made a poignantly powerful final appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman” on Thursday, performing a new song called “Take One Last Look”.
“This is for you, Dave,” Tom said before using his rusty crowbar of a voice to tear our hearts open, urging the departing talk show hero to “take one last look at the place that you’re leaving”. If you’re susceptible to tears while staring at a screen, you may want to hold off on this beautiful sadness. Watch below, as Dave and a handcuffed George Clooney look on.
How the almighty hell Letterman wasn’t weeping like a baby after that, I’ll never know.
Waits also interviewed by Letterman, recounting his long history of appearing on the show (he’s played ten times).
David Letterman’s final night as host of the “Late Show” is next Wednesday, May 20. (He’ll be replaced by Stephen Colbert.)
“I don’t know when I will see Dave again,” Waits said on his website. “I guess from now on we’ll have to settle for bumping into each other at pilates.”
