“I’m not a girl trying to be a star. I’m just a girl that sings,” a coy Amy Winehouse tells the camera in the haunting new trailer for the upcoming documentary biopic, Amy.
The freshly released full-length trailer shows the singer at the height of her success, prior to the tragic personal decline that led to her untimely death at the ominous age of 27.
Fresh off its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the Asif Kapadia-directed film features rare archival footage and previously unheard tracks from the singer, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011.
Most heartbreaking of all is seeing the young songstress – all smiles, laughs, jokes and hugs – before the downward spiral, so well-documented by the media – that ultimately led to her demise.
As with the film’s previously released teaser trailer, Winehouse’s discomfort with fame is once again apparent here, with the addition of some hints about her troubled relationship with ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil. “I fell in love with someone who I would have died for,” Winehouse says in the clip. “And that’s like a real drug, isn’t it?”
Interestingly, the late singer’s family, despite being originally on board with the documentary, have since distanced themselves from it amid claims of inaccuracy.
Most recently, as Rolling Stone reports, Winehouse’s partner at the time of her death, Reg Traviss, has slammed the film as “a fictionalised biopic centred around a distorted depiction of Amy’s life”.
Amy is set to premiere in Australia on Thursday, 2nd July, before hitting theatres in New York, Los Angeles and the U.K. on July 3rd.
