Attention Kmart shoppers. A Beetlejuice (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice) sequel is happening, with the news coming direct from the mouth of Lydia Deetzes (aka Winona Ryder) herself.
“I think I can confirm it because Tim Burton did this interview,” explained Ryder while appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
“Like, it was very hush hush, top secret … and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah we’re doing it and Winona’s going to be in it’ and I was like [shocked].”
Ryder didn’t give much else away, telling Myers “I really don’t know much more than anybody”, but the admission was enough to get Beetlejuice fanatics screaming “It’s showtime” incessantly at the top of their lungs. Or, like, at least got them faux screaming online.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. has yet to officially give the Beetlejuice sequel the green light, but news of its existence has been circling for some time. Last December, Tim Burton let slip that he and star Michael Keaton had been discussing the long-anticipated follow-up and said there was already a script.
“There’s only one Beetlejuice, and that’s Michael. There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever… I miss that character. There’s something that’s cathartic and amazing about it. I think it’s closer than ever.”
C’mon now Warner Bros. Go ahead, make my millennium.
