We Will Rock You, the hit musical inspired by the music of English rockers Queen, is set to make its triumphant return to Australia in 2016, 13 years after it first debuted down under.
Based on the songs of Queen and a book by Ben Elton, We Will Rock You tells the story of a group of bohemians who are trying to break from the grasp of conformity in the near future.
The production, which first premiered in London in 2002, travelled to Melbourne in 2003 before arriving in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney in 2004. Since then, We Will Rock You has toured Europe, Asia, Canada, New Zealand and the US, and is now set to hit Australia once again next year.
Dates and venues for the musical’s 2016 Australian tour are yet to be announced, but production already has a killer team behind it, with Elton as director and Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor as music supervisors.
“This show is all about legend,” says Elton. “We take the legend of Queen and create our own fantastical story of young kids battling the mighty corporations who want to suppress their individuality and their love of music.”
Brian May says the production also works as a metaphor. “People definitely come out of the theatre feeling that in a strange way they now know us, Queen, and out struggle, our journey,” he says.
