Flight Of The Conchords – that’s “formerly New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo”, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement – are officially writing a movie and planning a highly-anticipated 2016 tour.
Flight Of The Conchords fans have been crying out for some sweet new jams ever since the pair’s HBO TV series ended in 2009, and in a new interview with Indiewire, Clement has confirmed the duo are writing a film. The film’s future, though, is uncertain.
“We have actually started writing [a movie],” Clement says in the interview. “But who knows if it will ever be made. We’ve written some notes for some different film ideas. We’re not down to the stage where we’re going, ‘The film is going to be like this.’ It could be this, this, this, this, this.”
Flight Of The Conchords last toured Australia in 2012, and while no new dates have been locked in anywhere in the world, Clement has said that he and his buddy Bret were actually planning on touring the US this year, but that was put on hold due to his role in Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant.
“We were planning on doing it this summer, but then I ended up doing The BFG instead,” Clement tells Consequence Of Sound .
“So it’s my fault we didn’t do it this time. But we are hoping to announce a tour. We’ll announce it before the end of the year, hopefully, and then some time next year get on the road … after we get some new guitar strings and that sort of thing.”
Rhys Darby, who played Flight Of The Conchords’ well-meaning but utterly hopeless manager Murray Hewitt in the band’s HBO series, urged the pair to make a movie back in 2012, and it looks like that dream could soon become a reality.
Until then, it’s time for some Sugar Lumps.
