A period piece costume drama about the first person to undergo transgender surgery? From the director of The King’s Speech and the star of The Theory of Everything? You know what that means… you are going to be hearing a LOT about The Danish Girl in the months to come.
The new drama is poised to become a major Academy Awards contender if it’s even halfway decent, and if for any reason the movie turns out badly, that would be a major development in the Oscar race too. The first trailer for The Danish Girl premiered online this morning, in advance of its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival this Saturday, and it appears to be soulful as all get out. Take a gander at this description…
The remarkable love story inspired by the lives of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne [“The Theory of Everything”] and Alicia Vikander [“Ex Machina”]), directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (“The King’s Speech,” “Les Misérables”). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.
The Danish Girl also plays at the Toronto International film Festival on Saturday, September 12 in advance of its official theatrical release on November 27, 2015.
