A host of New Zealand’s best and brightest have come together to record a “We Are The World”-type fight song for the All Blacks with all the proceeds going to charity Cure Kids to bring attention to Batten disease.
Led by the Flight Of The Conchords team who have previously worked within the charity song medium for “Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)”, the line-up of stars is huge, and to a non kiwi often hard to identify. Lorde, Kimbra, Joel Little, Peter Jackson and some of the All Blacks are all on boards as well as a whole host of other kiwi actors, musos and sporting stars.
While the prospect of another all star charity song may not have you jumping out of your seat in excitement, this isn’t your typical sappy uplifting charity song. Rather than rely on the ideas of the musicians, the song is based on ideas that children had suggested might help the All Blacks win. The results are, of course, hilarious.
The song, titled “Team Ball Player Thing” features such varied and creative ideas to help them win such as equipping the team with jet packs, having them play before the other teams turn up, riding unicorns and even taking a magical new supplement, Vitamin Rugby. Peter Jackson also suggests breaking the song up into three songs to get more out of it.
Anyway, rather than go through the video point by point and ruin any kind of surprise, why don’t you just watch the thing below, which also includes a video record of the early songwriting meeting with the kids and stars.
It’s available on iTunes now and you can donate to #kiwiscurebatten at Kiwiscurebatten.com.
