Last year, Chris Miller and Phil Lord set up a remake of The Greatest American Hero at Fox with plans to completely reimagine the protagonist. Ralph Hinkley (as played by William Katt in the original series) was out, and in his place was Isaac, an “inner-city teacher” who discovered the superpowered alien suit under similar circumstances.
While Fox declined to go forward with the previous take on The Greatest American Hero, the network is apparently excited about Miller and Lord’s second attempt at the remake. According to Deadline, Rodney Rothman has been replaced as the screenwriter by Rick Famuyiwara, who will write and direct a new pilot for the rebooted series.
Fox has already hired a casting director, which means the search is currently underway to find a performer to star in the new pilot. The original version of The Greatest American Hero ran on ABC during the ‘80s and it was created by Steven J. Cannell. In that iteration, high school teacher Ralph Hinkley was given a supersuit by aliens that bestowed powers upon the wearer. However, Hinkley quickly lost the manual and he had to resort to comedic trial and error as he learned how to use the suit to become a hero.

Miller and Lord previously directed The LEGO Movie and both 21 Jump Street films. In addition to co-directing the upcoming Star Wars Han Solo stand alone movie, Miller and Lord are also executive producing Last Man on Earth for Fox. Tawnia McKiernan, the daughter of Cannell, is also attached to The Greatest American Hero remake with Miller and Lord.
