Even though the second season of HBO’s True Detective wasn’t the cultural phenomena that the first season was, it was once again of HBO’s most watched series. Understandably, HBO appears to be up for a third season of True Detective, but that will depend upon its creator, Nic Pizzolatto.
According to Deadline, Pizzolatto has signed a new deal with HBO that will go through 2018. The deal includes provisions for Pizzolatto’s new projects and a potential third season of True Detective, if Pizzolatto chooses to make it. But as of now, Pizzolatto has not indicated if True Detective will continue.

Prior to True Detective, Pizzolatto’s only TV credit was as a staff writer on The Killing. Pizzolatto’s scripts for the first season of True Detective attracted Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to the lead roles, and both actors remain with the series as producers.
The second season of True Detective featured Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn as the leading characters in a new storyline. If True Detective Season 3 goes forward, it would also feature a new cast and a new storyline. But without a firm commitment or a filming schedule in place, it appears that True Detective won’t be getting a third season before 2017 at the earliest.
