Marvel Announces Mockingbird Ongoing Series

Thanks to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Mockingbird has never had a higher profile than she does now. Actress Adrianne Palicki has even signed on to reprise her role as Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse in the pilot episode of Marvel’s Most Wanted, which could lead to a third Marvel series on ABC.

If the Mockingbird-led Marvel’s Most Wanted goes forward, Marvel Comics is going to be ready to capitalize on it. Marvel has announced that a Mockingbird ongoing series will debut in 2016, from the creative team of writer Chelsea Cain and artist Kate Niemczyk. Cain previously wrote the Mockingbird one-shot that was released earlier this year to tie into the 50th Anniversary of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s first appearance.

Unlike her television counterpart, the comic book incarnation of Mockingbird is both a superheroine and a spy. During Brian Michael Bendis’ New Avengers run, Mockingbird’s life was saved by an injection of the Infinity Formula and the Super Soldier Serum, which gave her super strength and healing abilities for the first time. According to Cain, that history will partially lead into the first storyline of the Mockingbird comic.

“Truly, the plot of the first five issues is rooted very much in Bobbi’s medical history,” said Cain during an interview with Marvel.com. “[Nick] Fury saved her life…and I really wanted to explore the fallout from that… She’s got to go in every week for a medical check-up. And I loved the idea of this medical clinic for super heroes — a place where they go to get stitched up and get their Prozac refilled. And the waiting room would be full of bored heroes leafing through old issues of ‘Us Weekly.’”

“Would Bobbi uncover a conspiracy in that sort of environment?,” asked Cain. “Well she is good at ferreting out conspiracies having been subjected to them a number of times herself. Frankly she’s a little sensitive about that. But the books will also show Bobbi on her personal time, and off having Bond-level adventures — the Roger Moore years.”

Mockingbird # 1 will debut in early 2016.
