As viewers of Doctor Who already know, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) has made his long awaited return to Gallifrey in the penultimate episode of season nine. But there’s an even bigger reunion ahead.
This year’s Doctor Who Christmas special will bring Alex Kingston back as River Song, the Doctor’s wife and fellow time traveler. When River Song made her debut in the fourth season of Doctor Who opposite David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor, she claimed to know all of his faces. But that may have been a lie, considering that she won’t know Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor when they meet on screen for the first time.
In fact, this year’s Christmas special promises to be very River-centric. BBC has revealed that title of the episode is “The Husbands of River Song.” That certainly implies that the Doctor isn’t the only one married to River! Oh…and there seems to be some kind of red robot causing trouble in this newly released poster for the Christmas special. At least the Doctor appears to have a new sonic screwdriver for the occasion!

“Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who,” said Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat.“And what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her, she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…”
The rest of the story details are currently under wraps, but the guest cast will include Matt Lucas, Greg Davies, Rowan Polonski, Robert Curtis, Chris Lew Kim Hoi, and Nonso Anozie.
BBC One will premiere Doctor Who: The Husbands of River Song on December 25, with BBC America slated to show it later on Christmas day. But if you can wait a few additional days, BBC and Fathom Events will be putting Doctor Who: The Husbands of River Song into a limited number of U.S. theaters on December 28 and 29.
