Winnipeg’s Guy Maddin and his co-director Evan Johnson have won the $100,000 Rogers Best Canadian Film Award for their project The Forbidden Room.
“I’m so happy and honoured,” Maddin said when claiming his prize. “$100,000 is enormously generous, thank you. With it, we hope to bring an NFL franchise to Winnipeg,” he joked.
Johnson added, “I just want to take back every negative thing I’ve ever said about film critics and corporations. Thank you.” (The Canadian Press)
The Forbidden Room is the story of a submarine crew, a feared pack of forest bandits, a famous surgeon, and a battalion of child soldiers who all get more than they bargained for as they wend their way toward progressive ideas on life and love. It stars Charlotte Rampling, Geraldine Chaplin, Mathieu Amalric and Roy Dupuis.
