“I am fire and life incarnate! Now and forever, I am Phoenix!”
One of the most influential X-Men storylines is getting immortalized as a statue later this year. Sideshow Collectibles has unveiled the first photos of its Dark Phoenix Premium Format Figure, which features Jean Grey fully corrupted by the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix.
As originally conceived by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in 1980, original X-Men member Jean Grey was overcome by the power of the Phoenix and she became Dark Phoenix, a threat so dangerous that the major alien races demanded that Jean be destroyed, even after the X-Men had seemingly cured her.
Marvel artist Kris Anka designed Sideshow’s new Dark Phoenix statue in collaboration with Ian MacDonald, Keith Kopinski, and Jean-Paul Mavinga. The sculpt was made by Joe Jung and Will Harbottle, with paints by Kat Sapene and mold & cast by Simon Garcia. It was produced in 1/6 scale, and it is a truly impressive piece that captures the spirit of the character.
Sideshow Collectibles is also releasing a Dark Phoenix variant, which gives Jean a more human facial appearance. She even looks a little like Famke Janssen, the actress who portrayed Jean Grey in the first three X-Men movies.
Preorders for the Dark Phoenix Premium Format Figure begin today on Sideshow’s website, but be warned! It’s a pretty pricey collectible. Sideshow is charging $499.99 for it, with payment plans available.
