David Bowie’s final album Blackstar was David Bowie’s “final message” to his fans, with the singer knowing that he was soon going to die during the creation process behind the LP, producer Tony Visconti has revealed.
Describing his death as a “work of art”, Visconti revealed that he had known “for a year” that Bowie was approaching the end of his life, and that Blackstar was deliberately planned as a “parting gift”.
Taking to his Facebook page, Visconti wrote: “He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art.
“He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.”
Visconti worked with Bowie throughout his career, producing the singer’s first hit album, Space Oddity, and going on to co-produce Low and Heroes alongside Brian Eno. Visconti teamed up with Bowie for his final two albums, The Next Day and Blackstar, and the pair remained lifelong friends.
David Bowie passed away on January 10th, 2016. He is remembered by his wife Iman, and his two children, Duncan Jones and Alexandria Zahra Jones.
