Microsoft has always struggled with popularizing its Xbox brand in Japan, but it seems the hardware manufacturer is having even more problems shifting the Xbox One than it did the Xbox 360. According to reports, only 99 units of the console were sold last week, compared to the 25,592 PS4 units that were sold in the same timeframe.
These numbers were posted by the data tracking company Media Create (via Kotaku), revealing that Xbox One sales have now slipped below triple digits, after the console sold 293 and 490 units in the two previous weeks. This steady decline highlights Microsoft’s inability to make a dent in the Japanese market, falling well below the sales of their biggest competitor and the country’s leading console, the New Nintendo 3DS XL, which shifted 30,172 units.
The Xbox One even sold less than the PlayStation 3, a last generation console, and fell below four versions of the 3DS console. Here are the console sales from the week beginning January 11th:
- New Nintendo 3DS XL: 30,172 units
- PlayStation 4: 25,592
- PlayStation Vita: 18,202
- Wii U: 15,398
- New Nintendo 3DS: 6,241
- Nintendo 3DS: 4,797
- PlayStation 3: 1,939
- Nintendo 3DS XL: 1,162
The Xbox One’s lack of momentum in Japan is a massive failure for Microsoft, and will undoubtedly cause a ripple effect on the release of a potential future successor to the console in the region. But for the time being, all Microsoft can do is continue to count its losses, and hope that they’ll eventually release a game that might lead to them moving into the four-digit territory.
