American game show Jeopardy, which is in its 32nd season, recently posted on its website that Canadian contestants need not apply, not specifying why the rules have changed. The irony is, long-time host Alex Trebek is a hometown boy, hailing from Sudbury, Ontario.
The Canadian Press is saying that media reports quote the show’s producers as saying the problem is due to international laws governing how information is shared over the Internet. The Star added quotes from producers of Jeopardy, who said, “As international laws governing how information is shared over the internet are ever-changing and complex, we are currently investigating how we can accept registrations from potential Canadian contestants” (spokesperson Alison Shapiro said in an email). “The Jeopardy! Adult, Teen, and College tests have already taken place this year, and we are making every effort to find a solution before the next round of testing is available.”
Jeopardy is one of the most successful game shows of all time. Created by Merv Griffin, Jeopardy has won more than 30 Daytime Emmys as well as a Peabody Award.
