There’s a National Lampoon biopic in the works, and Joel McHale, the comedian/actor/writer/producer/host/44-year-old-with-a-rig who plays Jeff on Community, is possibly in line to play his community co-star Chevy Chase. It’s almost as if everything’s coming back together in a neat, little package.
A Futile and Stupid Gesture, based on Josh Karp’s book of the same name, is set to be directed by David Wain and so far has locked in Saturday Night Live favourite Will Forte as National Lampoon co-founder Douglas Kenney.
Kenney, who died in mysterious circumstances at the age of 33, and Chase had a very close relationship during their time together at the groundbreaking American comedy institution, which started with a magazine and made a few movies which usually appear on Channel 9 over the Christmas period.
Domhnall Gleeson will also appear in A Futile and Stupid Gesture as another co-founder, Henry Beard, with the Netflix production aiming for a 2017 release date.
Chase is apparently a very difficult person to work with, something McHale might know a thing or two about considering their time together on “Community” and Chase’s falling out with the creative direction on the show.
