Roundabout Records are set to open a new vinyl pressing plant in Adelaide later in 2016.
The label has acquired a 1950s Neumann AM-32 from New Zealand, which is the last of its kind. Roundabout will have their new set-up running by December.
“I was the first one to get to Auckland,” Roundabout’s Colin Forster told CityMag. “A guy jumped on a plane in Germany that night, and a guy jumped on a plane in America that night, and just because I got there first, I was pretty lucky.”
The news of Roundabout’s new purchase comes in the midst of a resurgence of vinyl around the glove, and in Australia in particular. “A million (vinyl) records (were sold) in Australia last year, and that was 30.8 per cent up on the year before,” said Forster.
The plant will operate as a small-scale but fully servicing pressing plant, with the potential for recording and mastering as well. Roundabout will aim to make 100 to 1000 discs per order at Adelaide’s only boutique record pressing facility.
